Mid-Life Career Crisis Overview

  • Is an inner voice persistently telling you that it’s time for change, no matter how you try to ignore it?
  • Do you look back on your career and think, “My career so far has been a good run, but I’m ready for a change.”
  • Are you running in circles to keep up with your job - and feeling unfulfilled?
  • Do you wake up wondering, "I don't want to do this work for another week, let alone the rest of my life”?
  • Have you reached a point in your life where you want work to be more meaningful?
  • Have you decided it’s time for more work-life balance?

There are many valid reasons why some of us become restless or discontent with our career. Some choose to stay put for fear of making a mistake. Such significant career change can be very scary and many of us experience emotions such as fear, self-doubt and even dread.  We wonder what impact this might have on our family, whether we will be successful and happy at something new, or if we are simply being irrational to want something different.

Yet the number of people making the leap to something completely different has been and continues to rise significantly each year. More and more clients are coming to us asking for help in making a career change. Although it’s becoming more common to make these changes, it hasn’t gotten easier.  It’s often a period of much uncertainty and confusion, and it is likened to an emotional roller coaster ride.

Working with a career coach greatly increases the probability that one will make a successful transition. Together, the client and coach create a plan of action with specific concrete steps.  The coach’s role is to hold the client accountable, to help move the process forward and to give honest and direct feedback regarding potential obstacles. We also guard against client self-sabotage. The client’s role is to be committed to the process, open-minded and take action by fulfilling agreements.

“My career always revolved around Finance. I stayed with one company for 19 years, rose through the ranks, made great money, and yet found myself longing to do something very different. I wasn’t happy and felt like life was passing me by. This work didn’t have any meaning to me anymore. I worked with Terry for six months. She helped me reframe my background and articulate my talents in a way that appealed to a different industry. It was hard work. At one point I got so frustrated that I almost accepted another finance role in my current organization; just to have a change. She pushed me to keep going towards something different. I was amazed at how the process worked – networking in the right way really paid off. I’m working as a Senior Research Program Manager with a world renowned healthcare organization. This work is compelling, meaningful and I’m very happy.”
